Summary

Up through Research Unix Version 6 (V6), the exec(2) system call enforced a strict 510-byte limit on command-line arguments (argv). This limitation arose from the kernel's clever yet brute-force method of using standard 512-byte disk buffers as temporary scratch space to transfer argument data between user and kernel memory. By Version 7 (V7)—which introduced environment variables—the implementation evolved to utilize swap space via disk buffers, ultimately paving the way for more modern memory management.

The Origins of the 510-Byte Limit

When executing a new program (exec()), a process discards its current memory address space. Because the arguments (argv) to be passed to the new program reside in the current user memory, the kernel must temporarily copy this data into kernel space.

In modern operating systems, this is handled via dynamic kernel memory allocation (similar to malloc()). However, early Research Unix kernels were remarkably simple and lacked such mechanisms. Instead, up through V6, the kernel reused an existing facility for its temporary scratch space: disk buffers.

Because these disk buffers were 512 bytes long, the command-line argument size limit was naturally capped at 510 bytes (including argv[0], the program's nominal name).

Note: It remains slightly unclear why the limit is precisely 510 bytes rather than 512, as the final two bytes may have been reserved for auxiliary bookkeeping.

You can inspect this check returning the E2BIG error in the V6 kernel exec() code via sys/ken/sys1.c.

Brute-Force Kernel Design

Relying on disk buffers might sound like it simply shifts the dynamic allocation problem to the disk buffering system, but early Research Unix relied heavily on brute-force simplicity.

The V6 kernel maintained a fixed, limited array of memory reserved for disk buffers (buffers in sys/dmr/bio.c), with its maximum size defined by NBUF in sys/param.h.

Because early Research Unix operated on severely resource-constrained systems, these limits were very low. For context, that same param.h configuration file capped the entire system at just 50 processes total. This approach to exec() and disk buffers dates back to at least Research Unix V4.

Evolution in Version 7: The Swap Space Trick

By the time Research Unix V7 arrived, the kernel implementation grew significantly more complex, primarily because it now needed to support environment variables.

To accommodate extra space without consuming scarce RAM, V7 repurposed swap space. It read and wrote to swap using the standard disk buffer system (which often meant the buffer written to swap was still cached in RAM when read back moments later).

V7 的 exec()exece() 例程功能如下:

The V7 exec() and exece() routine functioned as follows: 1. 1. Allocate a disk buffer in swap space. 2. 2. Copy data from user space into the disk buffer until full. 3. 3. Flush and release the disk buffer. 4. 4. Acquire a new disk buffer for the next block of swap, repeating the process.

The Whole-Program Swapping Complication

V7 did not feature page-based swapping; it swapped entire programs in and out. During an exece(), V7 allocated swap space for an NCARGS-sized "program," consuming disk buffers one block at a time as needed. If the system failed to allocate the required swap space during exece(), the kernel panicked.

Trivia: C Syntax in V6

Examining the V6 source code for exec() reveals an unusual line:

suword(ap=+2, c);
This looks syntactically incorrect to modern programmers, but in V6 C, =+ was the standard syntax for in-place addition—the historical precursor to the modern += operator we use today.
