(Summary)

Modern vehicles rely on electronic control units (ECUs) that generate vast quantities of asynchronous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Traditionally, automotive experts manually group these codes using Boolean rules to identify system faults. However, as modern vehicles scale to tens of thousands of unique DTCs—rivaling natural language vocabularies—this manual process becomes costly, error-prone, and unsustainable.

This PhD dissertation introduces a paradigm shift by treating high-dimensional diagnostic sequences as a language to be modeled, predicted, and explained. The research bridges event sequence modeling, causal discovery, and Large Language Models (LLMs) into a unified framework. It presents: 1. Transformer-based architectures for predictive maintenance. 2. Scalable causal discovery frameworks operating at both the sample and population levels. 3. A multi-agent system capable of automatically synthesizing Boolean error pattern rules.
