Summary

This paper investigates the role of Artificial Intelligence in distributed computing, specifically targeting the notoriously difficult problem of consensus and state machine replication (SMR). The authors introduce AI-greement, an agent harness that autonomously discovers, implements, experiments with, and verifies consensus protocols. Through this system, they discovered A-greement, a new geo-replicated consensus protocol that significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art solutions across various workloads while uncovering hidden vulnerabilities in prior protocols. Ultimately, the authors argue that while AI agents revolutionize protocol discovery, human expertise remains vital throughout the research process.

Abstract

Consensus is a fundamental problem in distributed computing and at the core of state machine replication (SMR). Despite decades of active human research, discovering practical low-latency solutions to the problem is still open, as it requires combining protocol knowledge, correctness reasoning, implementation, and experimental evaluation.

We report on how AI helped us discover A-greement, a new consensus protocol for geo-replicated state machines that significantly outperforms state-of-the-art solutions. Averaged across six deployments with 5 or 9 replicas, A-greement reduces the mean latency of a geo-distributed key-value store over the fastest baseline by:

  • 在写密集型工作负载下,平均延迟降低 12.2%;
  • 在读密集型工作负载下,平均延迟降低 33.3%;
  • 12.2% on write-heavy workloads
  • 33.3% on read-heavy workloads
  • Matches the fastest baseline on read-only workloads

A-greement

Key Components of A-greement

  • 租约授权的本地安全读取 (Lease-authorized local reads):借助基于租约机制的本地读取授权,省去跨节点网络往返;
  • 主节点定序写操作的客户端直连学习 (Direct client learning for leader-ordered writes):客户端可直接向各副本学习由主节点统一排序的写事务状态,大幅缩减确认链路;
(A fast fixed-quorum per-key write path selected according to network topology and workload):根据实际网络拓扑结构与运行时工作负载特征,为特定键自适应匹配固定法定人数 (Quorum) 的快速写路径。

AI-greement

The AI-greement Agent Harness

At the heart of this discovery lies AI-greement, an agent harness designed for the "autonomous" discovery, implementation, experimentation, and verification of candidate protocols. It integrates:

  1. 面向概念体系的协议知识库 (A concept-oriented protocol knowledge base):结构化梳理并沉淀了丰富的共识协议设计原理与概念模型;
  2. 高度模块化的实现脚手架骨架 (A modular implementation skeleton):提供统一解耦的系统工程接口,便于协议代码的快速组装与插拔;

  3. A Lean-based verification framework with reusable safety definitions, reference specifications, and proofs

AI-greement

Impact of AI-greement

Beyond discovering new protocols, AI-greement's Lean formalization uncovered several previously unreported vulnerabilities in existing consensus protocols. It provides actionable guidelines on how domain-specific harnesses can transform general-purpose coding agents into effective tools for distributed computing research.

However, the authors maintain that human consensus experts remain essential before, during, and after the search—arguing that AI agents reshape the researcher's role rather than signaling the end of consensus research.
